St. Joseph's Church, Fanling is a Parish church built in the 1950s and has been serving the community for over five decades.  In 2009, the Church saw an opportunity to expand its facilities onto the immediately adjacent parking lot so as to increase church services for the community.  The new extension to St. Joseph's Church with approximately Gross Floor Area of 2,400sqm includes a new multi-purpose auditorium, community services centre, activities rooms and priest quarters.  The design also enriches the religious experience with shade and light, echoing the Seven Sorrows and Joys of St. Joseph – the Patron Saint of the church. The pyramid skylight above the new altar in the basement exudes biblical imagery and stories.

The original St. Joseph's Church is the only remaining building of its type in the Luen Wo Hui Area.  It is a religious hub for locals and a prominent landmark.  The existing church building has been identified as a potential Grade III Historical Building. Heritage conservation is, therefore, one of the most important considerations in the design.  This is not only a design mechanism to achieve a sustainable development, but also a means to continue to celebrate the legacy of this local spiritual community for the generations to come.

The project won a BEAM Plus-NB [v1.2] Provisional Bronze in 2020.
