Background

In order to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community and to improve the healthcare service quality, the HKSAR Government has set aside a dedicated provision of HK$200 billion and announced the 10-year Hospital Development Plan (HDP) in 2016, and a further HK$270 billion for a second 10-year HDP in 2019. The two HDP involve not just construction of new hospitals and supporting service centre, but also redevelopment/extension of the existing hospitals.

These capital works projects involve huge amount of financial injection (HK$470 billion), and also talent of building professionals involving in the project design, planning and implementation in meeting the future service needs.

This Series consisted of 2 CPD seminars respectively for planning of new hospital projects and the facility management and works related to the existing hospitals and 2 site visits (remarks: one to HASSC and the second to Kwong Wah Hospital redevelopment) for Hospital Authority's (HA) projects.

Project Information

The current buildings of KWH were constructed in 1960s and 1980s but extremely heavy utilization of its facilities for coping with the growing service demand has accelerated their deterioration. Though numerous improvement works have been carried out over the years to address the issues of inadequate space and outdated facilities, the situation is still suboptimal for accommodating the service need and service modernization of KWH. Thus, a redevelopment of KWH will be carried out to facilitate the provision of modern and safe services for meeting future healthcare needs of the community.

The redeveloped Kwong Wah Hospital with total construction floor area of 273,161m2 adopted the concept of an atrium mall as the central circulation node with transparent glazing façade to create a wide and comfortable area for patients and visitors.  The total construction cost is about $20.59Billion.

The proposed scope of service shall consist of new services including emergency medicine ward & medical oncology and existing and expanded services including Ambulatory, pathology, etc.
