Message from PDD Chairman (November 2011)

World Organisation of Building Officials (WOBO) Meeting 2011 - Phoenix, Arizona, USA

I attended the World Organisation of Building Officials (WOBO) Meeting 2011 held in Phoenix, Arizona, USA from 31 October to 2 November 2011. The meeting was held in conjunction with the International Code Council (ICC) Conference. Therefore, I was able to meet some ICC delegates from other countries as well. In the WOBO meetings, we discussed reports and recent activities of WOBO. We also discussed WOBO’s participation in United Nations (UN) activities on the promotion of housing and building standards worldwide. For my part, I reported on the activities and work progress on behalf of the Events Organising Committee (of which I am the Chairman).

We also discussed on the forth coming WOBO Meeting 2012 and resolved to hold it in conjunction with the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) 2012 International Conference at Melbourne, Australia during 21 October 2012 to 24 October 2012. This AIBS conference will be a big event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the AIBS.

We look forward to this big event and the golden chance for establishing better link between WOBO and the southern hemisphere.

Annual Conference of Planning and Development Division on 12 November 2011
Our Annual Conference was held on 12 November with overwhelming support from members of all divisions. The event was attended by about 100 members (which exceed the total number of members of our division) of HKIS.

“Housing Strategies for People in Limited Development Space” has been chosen as the topic for this conference. This is really a hot topic in Hong Kong at this moment of time.

A number of “heavy weight” speakers from private and public sectors attended this conference and shared their insight on existing problems and the way forward with us. The talks were well received and response from the audience was very good.

I would take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the speakers including Mr C.Y. Leung, Mr Marco Wu, Ms Melissa Pang, Mr Barry Cheung, Mr Jimmy Leung, Mr Augustine Wong, Mr Duncan Warren Pescod. I would also like to thank Mr Edwin Tsang and all members in the Organizing Committee for their hard work to make this event so successful.

In future, I hope that the annual PDD conference can continue to serve as a platform for members and guests expressing their opinion on topics of concern. This can serve to maximize the benefit for our members as well as our community.
